With my growing blog (which is very exciting for me), I just want to take the time to share some things about me so you, the reader, can get to know me a little bit. “Who is this lady anyway?” I found a 31 day blogging challenge that sounds kinda fun so, here we go….. Although I have an about me page, I want to give a little more detailed Introduction.
My name is Kelly O’Brien. I have a wonderful husband of almost 22 years named Mike. We have 6 children together, Mikaylea (14), Morah (13), Morgan (11), Micah (10), Mathias (8 in 2 weeks ;)), and Mattie Maie (5). I have 2 bonus children Mallory (27) and Michael (26) that are no longer in our home as they are both all grown up and in the Army (of which I am very proud of).
I was born and raised in a little town in North Idaho and I am still there. I was a 12 year senior in the local public school system and very involved in school and activities. I actually loved school! Yep, I was one of those. I loved everything about school! I was an athlete (basketball & volleyball), an honors student, and yes even a band nerd :)! I was raised in a Catholic home and the Lord Jesus saved my soul in 1982 at summer camp.
As a teen, I was very involved in Bible Camp and had an awesome youth leader who discipled a couple of us (later became Youth Leadership) and trained us to work up at camp as cabin leaders. I worked at camp for many years and became a summer missionary working as a cabin leader and program directing. I loved camp. Such great memories! And a vital part of walk with Jesus.
For my first year of college, I was recruited to play basketball and volleyball at a Baptist college in Oregon. This was one of the hardest years of my life! I did not realize how attached to my family and hometown I really was. It was a great experience, but too far from my family. I did not go back. I did, however, go to a local Bible college for a semester and continued my work with the camp and actually taught other Youth Leadership classes in the area.
Being back at home encouraged me to get a J-O-B. My first real, full time job was for a daycare and this is where I met my husband and bonus kiddos. Although, we did not start seeing each other until I had been gone from there for several months. He just called me out of the blue….I thought he was calling looking for a sitter, as I had connected with Mallory and Michael. That was NOT why he was calling. 🙂
Fast forward…we got married. I, eventually, went back to school at the local junior college on a volleyball scholarship which moved into a coaching job! Life was good! Married (to a police officer). Back in school. College athlete turned college coach. I graduated with a teaching degree and got a job right away teaching, coaching, and athletic director for a local Christian school.
This is where our life started to unravel….a blog post for another day.
But God is so faithful! He is still in the redeeming and restoring business! And for that I am so very thankful!
He restored our marriage and changed our life immensely. We had been married for 7 years at this point, but life was new! We had a new baby on the way…..and in my mind this was truly a blessing for obedience! We had six kids (7 pregnancies) in 9 years. I was turning 30 years old, no longer a teacher, my husband no longer a police officer, but we were together and happy. Mike, who is a very talented and hard working man did whatever it took to provide for us.
After having Morgan, we had some more shake ups in our family. We had to make some very difficult decisions. Decisions I would not wish on any family. But God is faithful!
We had moved a couple different times and it was time to move again, but God never opened any doors for us. We were basically homeless, staying with different friends. It was at this point we were approached by some friends from church about an apartment managers job. My husband said, “Absolutely not!” But God had other plans…..we moved into our apartment and new job the next month. 🙂 Thank the Lord for His faithfulness, despite our lack.
We have been at the apartments for almost 11 years now. We love the company we work for and most of the people we have met. Although, I was hired to be the office manager all those years ago, it became Mike’s job as I was pregnant with Micah within a couple months of starting. It has been a great job, providing us so many things, the greatest being time freedom.
In the meantime, I started homeschooling our kids, became involved in MOPS as ministry, had a couple more kids, and W.O.W. (Women of the Word, a ladies Bible Study, now called Pursue). We have been involved in other ministries together, as well.
After being here 10 years, an opportunity for Mike to go back into law enforcement. That meant I now, became the office manager and re-entered back into the workplace. (Although, I was very involved with the managing throughout our years). But also, daddy is really at work not just down the sidewalk. 😉 So, we have had some transitions, but it has been good for the most part.
Now, I am a wife of a Deputy Sheriff, a mom of 2 teenagers plus 4, a mother of 2 adult children, a project manager, Pursue lecturer, Advocare distributor, and now a blogger.
Life is good……
I would love to hear more about you! Please introduce yourself…..
