We have been trying to save money and pay off debt and really the only place that has any give is our food budget. My goal for this year is to feed my family of eight on $500 food budget per month.
We started this year with a spending freeze. I tried to not spend any money on anything. Wow that it so hard. You do not realize what you are spending on a whim until you do a spending freeze. We did get a bit creative in our cooking but it truly was amazing how many healthy meals we could make with a little bit of thought. I still have an almost to the top freezer full of food.
Here is a break down of what I have spent so far this month:
$ 5. 87 on wheat montana flour
1/4/2015 Total = $ 7.95
Jan 9, 2015- 2 packs English muffins .68 x 2
2 boxes of cereal (Friday’s are cereal day and we were completely out) 3.28 x 2
1 organic romaine lettuce 1.98
1/2 & 1/2 1.98
2 packs chicken nuggets 3.98 x 2
1/9/2015 Total= $9.84
January 2015 total spending: $17.79
Amount left: $482.21
This week I will hopefully start posting our menus so you can see what we are eating as well as holding me accountable to do it! I menu plan very well but the execution is not so much :).
I should explain to you some things about our eating style. I am a THM’er for those of you who do not know what that stands for, it is Trim Healthy Mama. I try to cook that way for everyone. We really try to eat organic but at least non-GMO. Now, there are times that I splurge on the kids (like store bought chicken nuggets) but for the most part we eat mostly whole food, from scratch meals three times a day.
Do you have any tips on saving on your food budget? We would love to hear your comments and ideas!
