There was a day when my bed was never made. I remember back even as far as middle school, making my bed was not a habit that I chose to make a priority. I mean really? I am only going to get back into it later….right?
The first, almost 10 years of my marriage, my bed was probably made only when I washed my sheets. Of course, to my credit ;)(here comes the justification), there was usually someone in it, as my husband worked graveyard. But somewhere along my journey, I had a shift in my thinking.
I attended an eight week class on organizing my home. It was truly life changing. My perspective was beginning to be transformed. I no longer viewed chores as “house-work” but a way to bless and serve my family. I wanted to create a place of peace and a place of rest, instead of chaos and disorder. And for me, that started in my room with my bed.
But let’s get down to the nitty gritty…..here are 3 reasons why you should make your bed everyday.
- It’s Simple to do! C’mon now, let’s face it. Making your bed is a very simple task. The hard part here, is that it is also simple not to do. Don’t let it’s simplicity stop you! It only takes about 2 minutes to make your bed….O.K. 5 max ;). Make it easy. I only have a sheet, blanket and comforter. Pull them up, straighten them out, throw a couple pillows on, and BOOM, made bed!
- It creates Synergy in your day! I always feel much more motivated and energized when I start my day off with something accomplished. It sets the tone for the rest of my day. Of course, I do have to admit that I am a box checker. I love to have the feeling of accomplishment (especially within 2 minutes of the start of my day 😉 ).
- It establishes Self-Discipline! Who doesn’t need a small dose of self-discipline? It was amazing when I started the habit of making my bed what other habits fell into place. My whole morning routine sprang from the simple discipline of making my bed.
It is amazing now on my husband’s days off. He gets out of bed much later than I do. I always happen to catch a glance of an unmade bed….and that just won’t do! I immediately stop what I am doing and get the bed made. He just laughs at me because now it drives me crazy when my bed is not made. Now, if I could only get my kids to make their beds. Not sure that is a battle I am wanting to engage in at this time :).
I read an interesting statistic from Psychology Today that said 59% of 68,000 people surveyed, do not make their beds and only 27% do. (While the remaining 12 % pay a housekeeper to make their bed) The even more interesting finding was that out of the bed makers, 71% consider themselves happy; while 62 % of the non bed makers admit to being unhappy. Food for thought. You can read that article here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/brain-candy/201208/make-your-bed-change-your-life if it at all interests you.
I am interested to know….
Are you a bed maker?
Or a non bed maker?
I would love for you to leave me a comment. I might just conduct my own survey! 😉
